  3. **IMPORTANT** For all those who were interested in the MESA program for Math & Science with Emerson there is a good chance now it WILL NOT be available for our kids when they are in 6th grade. Due to budget cuts they have one teacher now running the program.

Not sure if MESA will be available to 6th graders but I have 6th and 7th grader there now. The 6th grade science teacher is fabulous. Both of my kids love this teacher (Garry Joseph). My husband is a scientist and he is happy to see them so excited about the subject. My 7th grader is in MESA this year and that science teacher, Robin Nagle, is also great. The 6th graders take a week long trip to Yosemite, which is a big hit. This year the 7th graders went to Cambria. Both trips are to science camps. So even if MESA is not offered in 6th it is in 7th and 8th and the overall science program is great.

  6. Thank you, Dara. It's good to get feedback from parents with students at Emerson. We are taking the tour on the 18th.

Is there anything you can let us know about the school other than their science programs that you like about Emerson?

As a parent there we'd all be interested for your input.

    Thanks!

Most importantly my kids are happy there and we feel that they are getting a good education. It is smaller than some of the other area middle schools and I feel that the principal is very accessible. I have to say that we have been happy with the curriculum in all of the classes. In 6th grade English, Math and Science are all strong with great teachers. In 7th grade there are great history teachers as well. My son (the 7th grader) went up 4 grades in reading over the course of the school year at Emerson. The English classes are literature based as opposed to using only the LAUSD text book. Last year "To Kill a Mocking Bird" was one of the books they read. The teachers my children have had are very enthusiastic about teaching. While the tour is great, I would also suggest attending a more intimate look at Emerson either by going to a Croissants & Conversation with Kathy (the Principal, Kathy Gonnella) or a Wine & Cheese. I am happy to provide you with the dates for these. The Wine & Cheeses are held in the private homes of current Emerson students or students from the local elementary schools who intend to go to Emerson. I can put you in touch with the organizers so that you can attend if you wish. Or if there is someone at your elementary school who is interested in hosting one we can probably put that together. Current Emerson parents and students attend these and you can put any question you like to them and the Principal (same is true of the principal at the Coffee & Croissants). If you are interested please contact me through our Emerson Arts & Education Foundation email (I am the president of the Foundation, which raises funds for school extras) at emersonfoundation@roadrunner.com

  8. Dara - That's great information! Thanks for posting. If you could get the dates for the Croissants & Coffee and the Wine & Cheese events, that would be good for prospective parents. Those types of events can really give a sense of what the school community is like and I encourage anyone who is looking at Emerson to attend.

Emerson compiled the standarized tests scores for the kids in the SAS/IHP program (School for Advanced Studies and Individualized Honors Program) and the calculated the API score for this "school within a school." The API score was 912, generally considered a great score. If your child has been identified as gifted in elementary school then they will qualify for admission but there are other ways to qualify for the program. For further information on having your child admitted to the program you can contact the counseling office at Emerson at 310-234-3100 and they can let you know the details on applying.
