Walter Reed Middle School's Vision
Walter Reed Middle School's vision is to provide its students with the ability to read, write and speak clearly; access information in a variety of ways, and become critical thinkers, by practicing problem solving in academic and societal situations. Walter Reed practices standards based instruction in order to help all students achieve mastery of the California State Standards in each content area.

What is DUST? Hmmm…this site dynamically presents visuals of schools' data, like ratio of teachers to students, racial mix, etc. I wish LACES was on it as I could see factual data on racial mix so I can determine what my mixed son's race should be if we were to apply. Many other schools are represented, so take a look. (And while we're at it, what is "iridescent"? Also interesting.)

DUST's goal is to create…"information visualization tool that will help urban education providers, policy makers, charter schools, funding agencies, social scientists and education researchers make more datadriven decisions about which schools to support based on the school's need, commitment and past record of managing resources. This tool will thus enable schools to be more transparent and accountable."

Magnet Applications--Now Online Only for 2011!

The CHOICES application is going online this year. Parents who are interested in applying to any Magnet Schools are encouraged to apply online. There will be a very small number of printed CHOICES applications this year and they will NO LONGER BE MAILED to families.

1) To apply online, parents must have an account with Parent Access through LAUSD at http://parentaccess.lausd.net/ (this process includes having an email address). Because this process may take time, parents should get an account on the "I'm In" website now (http://parentaccess.lausd.net/) [Note: It seems as though parents are having difficulty creating the account and are given an error message to contact the child's school. Will post the work-around when I get it.]

2) The CHOICES application is open from November 1 - December 16, 2011.

Portola Highly Gifted Magnet, established in 1979, shares the campus of Portola Middle School. Our highly gifted magnet school has been deemed a "Model of Excellence" school by the Los Angeles Unified School District. This designation means that more than 75% of our students score in the Proficient or Advanced range in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math on the annual testing administered by the state of California. Specifically, 99% of our students in ELA and 95% of our students in math score in the proficient/advanced range. Portola's percentages are the best in Los Angeles Unified School District among middle schools testing 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  The magnet program focuses on accelerated, in-depth course work in history, language arts, mathematics and science.  In addition to rigorous academic instruction, our magnet students participate in high numbers in Portola's award winning choir, orchestra, and drama productions.

As a highly gifted magnet, our student population is composed of students who score at the 99.5% and above on a district administered intelligence test. What this means is that our students are the best and brightest throughout LAUSD. In addition to excellent students, Portola has a highly qualified teaching staff who are experts at differentiating their instruction in order to provide a highly rigorous academic program for all our students. Highly qualified teachers plus academically highly gifted and capable students is a winning combination. We are on a single track calendar which begins in September and ends in June.
